AUGUST 22, 1987. LOWER PLENTY – Armed with a knife and a gun, the man removed a pane of glass from the lounge room window and broke into a family home about 4am. He forced both parents onto their stomachs and tied their hands and feet before he locked them in a wardrobe. Their seven-year-old son was tied to a bed and the 11-year-old daughter was then attacked. He cut the phone lines and left. Source

DECEMBER 27, 1988. RINGWOOD – Armed with a small handgun and a knife, the masked man broke in through the back door at 5.30am. He forced both parents onto their stomachs, bound and gagged them, disabled the phones and demanded money. He grabbed their 10-year-old daughter, Sharon Wills, placed tape over her eyes and put a ball in her mouth. He abducted the girl, releasing her – dressed in plastic rubbish bags — at Bayswater High School 18 hours later. Source

CANTERBURY – Armed with a knife and a gun, he broke into a house through a window at 11.30pm and forced the victim, 13 year old Nicola Lynas, onto her stomach before tying and gagging her. He taped over her eyes, drove her to another house where he kept her for 50 hours before releasing her in a public area in Kew. Source

APRIL 13, 1991. TEMPLESTOWE – The masked offender cut through a flywire screen to open a window. He confronted Karmein Chan, 13, and her two younger sisters. He forced the younger girls into a wardrobe and pushed a bed against it, before abducting Karmein about 9.15pm. Her remains were found at Edgars Creek, Thomastown, a year later. She had been shot three times in the head. Source

Evidence obtained from interviews with Nicola Lynas
Once they had arrived at their location, she was walked, blindfolded, to a house. They took only ten steps in a straight line; they never stepped sideways or around anything (indicating that the car was parked down a driveway that was on the right-hand side of the house block). She was barefoot and could feel concrete underneath. At the end of her walk, she stepped up three steps to a door (indicating a footpath coming off the driveway leading to two to four steps to the door). Source p128
On her first morning, she heard the ten o’clock news. The next news she listened to was at eleven,……She then amazed us by revealing that, during this hour, she heard and counted eleven aircraft flying overheard. She believed nine of them were jets and the other two aircraft were smaller.…. She said the aircraft were all flying from the same direction, at varying times in the hour, descending, on a flight path that moved across her body. But the aircraft eventually changed course, banking ninety degrees, then flying in a line from her head to her toe, before fading away. Source p129
What we now had was a firm belief that the ‘safe house’ where Nicky had been held was near an airport flight path,….. We turned to the head air traffic controller at Tullamarine International Airport,…..‘We only had one aircraft approach laneway open that morning.’….. ‘Laneway No. 2, approaching from the north-east towards Tullamarine.’
‘Does it run straight?’….. ‘It does for a while … then banks hard left, then into Tullamarine’……
‘Tell us the number of aircraft and type of aircraft on that approach between ten and eleven that morning.’…..‘For that hour there were only approach aircraft, not departures. We did nine jets and two smaller aircraft.’ Source p129/130

Every house in the suburbs underneath the No. 2 flight path had to be inspected from the outside…..It centered on the suburbs of Essendon and Keilor, more than 10,000 houses. Many could be eliminated by a quick drive-by, checking which side of the house block the driveway was located, while others could also be scratched using sheer common sense: those built on steep blocks, or where there were many steps leading to a front door. FBI profile of ‘Mr Cruel’
The FBI profile suggests Mr Cruel was unlikely to fit the popular stereotype of a child molester. “In view of the fact that these incidents all occur during school holidays … we suggest there is a high degree of probability that the offender is involved with a school. Update – Feb 2019
Opinion: There appears to be very little to indicate that the house used during the assaults was owned or occupied full time by “Mr Cruel”. For this reason one of the current lines of my research is on the houses occupied by resident school caretakers located within 10kl of Tullamarine Airport. Caretakers often took their own vacation during school holidays and “Mr Cruel” may have had access to the house during this time.

A number of clues indicate that “Mr Cruel” may have lived interstate at the time of his offences in Victoria.
